We believe in Change

Women in Shelter Environment (W.I.S.E) is a nonprofit organization with the main purpose of empowering vulnerable women through empowerment programs while having a safe haven for them by situating them into comfortable shelter homes.

Our objective is to provide safe houses in phases for women that are currently experiencing Domestic Violence and trafficked victims.

We are humbled to have built the First Acclaimed Domestic Violence Shelter in Nigeria, a 50-bed shelter space. According to a UN report published last year, more than 23% of women in Nigeria are currently experiencing domestic violence in their relationships. Some afraid to leave due to the cultural backlash of leaving the abuser and being tagged “bad wife” while others just do not know where to start living again because most of the women rely on the men solely for daily upkeep and financial support.

W.I.S.E is filling the gap with special interest on the mental, physical wellbeing and skills for these women; some of these women can stay in the house depending on their situation from a day till 6 months while empowering them with vocational skills to ease them back into the society as useful citizens. In Africa most especially Nigeria, Poverty is a big factor that leads to violence reported at home. We train the women on vocational skills, connect some of them to employers that can hire them for work hence breaking the poverty line. The women have access to medical personnel and law enforcing authorities. For some of the women that still want to return to their husbands after the process, we have counseling for both parties by W.I.S.E therapists and social workers.

W.I.S.E has been warmly received by the Federal Government and State Government in Nigeria for its positive impact in the society. An award was given to W.I.S.E President by the Federal Government of Nigeria to encourage the program.
